What an eMPowering Year!

I need to start off by saying, “What an amazing year!” I will even say, “What an eMPpowering year!” Hoping
you have read this far, you may ask, “What does Jim mean when he says that (and spells it that way)?”
Well, let’s dig in together!

We have a team of 220 passionate people providing extraordinary care at Carey Services. We have more
than 1,000 people positively impacted in some way in the last year by our team who is “Turning abilities
into opportunities.” We have a team empowering people to live their best lives. The empowerment
happens for our employees, and the people we serve and support.

So, you ask, “How are you empowering people at Carey Services?” Well, let’s “dig in” deeper to understand
what is really happening at Carey Services. When you Google the word “empower,” two definitions come
up from “Oxford Languages.” The first “Oxford Languages” definition is to, “…give someone the authority or
power to do something.” That’s where Carey Services comes in for the people we serve and employ. We
value giving people the tools and resources to be as successful and independent as possible. You might
say, we empower people towards independence for them to realize they are a valuable part of their
community.
The second definition is what excites me and
keeps me coming to work every single day; I
imagine the same is true for our team of
awesome employees. That definition says
empower means to, “….make (someone) stronger
and more confident, especially in controlling their
life and claiming their rights.” I hope you just got
goose bumps like I did from reading that and
imagining how Carey Services is fulfilling that
definition every single day. It is an awesome
place!

“So, Jim,” you might say, “Where do you go from
here?” And you might say, “Hey, what is that
spelling of ‘eMPower’ about earlier in this article?”
I am glad you asked . Our vision statement
drives my answer to the first question. We use the
word “empower” in our organization’s vision

Carey Services is here to create “A world where
all people are empowered and equally valued in the community.” One of our values motivates our team
to assure “Self-determination/self-direction empowers people.” Carey Services is in the community to
drive that vision and our values towards services the community needs.

Here’s the answer to the second question. Carey Services is about transformation. We are transforming
lives and transforming programs and facilities to make sure people are empowered. We have a new
eMPower Academy in our building on the bypass in Marion across from Lowe’s! You must come and see it!
